How to Prepare a Successful Surprise Proposal

Planning a surprise proposal is a thrilling yet nerve-wracking experience. It’s a moment that you and your partner will cherish forever, so you want to make sure everything goes perfectly. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you prepare a successful surprise proposal.

1. Understand Your Partner’s Preferences

Before you start planning, it’s crucial to understand what your partner would love. Do they prefer intimate moments or grand gestures? Are they comfortable with public displays of affection, or do they prefer private settings? Knowing these details will help you design a proposal that feels personal and thoughtful.

2. Choose the Perfect Location

Selecting the right location is key to a memorable proposal. Consider places that hold special significance to your relationship, such as where you first met, your favorite date spot, or a beautiful scenic area. Whether it’s a cozy spot at home, a picturesque beach, or a bustling city park, make sure it’s a place that will make the moment unforgettable.

3. Plan the Details

Once you’ve chosen the location, plan the finer details. Decide on the time of day, considering the lighting and ambiance you want to create. Think about any decorations or elements you’d like to incorporate, such as candles, flowers, or a special playlist. Attention to detail can make the proposal even more special.

4. Involve Friends and Family

If your partner would appreciate having loved ones involved, consider incorporating friends and family into the proposal. They can help with setup, capturing the moment, or even surprising your partner after the proposal. However, ensure that their presence aligns with your partner’s preferences and won’t overwhelm them.

5. Hire a Professional Photographer

Capturing the proposal moment is essential. Hiring a professional photographer ensures that you get high-quality photos to remember the day. A photographer can also help plan the logistics, such as finding the best angles and lighting, and staying hidden until the right moment. You’ll treasure these photos forever, so it’s worth the investment.

6. Keep the Ring Safe

The engagement ring is the centerpiece of the proposal, so keep it safe and hidden until the big moment. Choose a secure and discreet spot to store the ring, and practice how you’ll present it. If you’re nervous about carrying it, consider using a trusted friend or family member to hold it until you’re ready.

7. Prepare Your Speech

Think about what you want to say during the proposal. Reflect on your relationship, why you love your partner, and why you want to spend your life with them. While it’s important to speak from the heart, having a general idea of what you’ll say can help calm your nerves and ensure you convey your feelings clearly.

8. Plan for Any Contingencies

Even the best-laid plans can encounter hiccups, so prepare for any contingencies. Have a backup plan for the location in case of bad weather, and ensure that everyone involved knows their role and the timing. Flexibility is key to handling any unexpected challenges smoothly.

9. Practice Patience and Stay Calm

On the day of the proposal, stay calm and patient. Nerves are natural, but trust that your planning will pay off. Focus on the moment and your partner, and remember that the most important thing is the love you share.

10. Celebrate!

After the proposal, take time to celebrate together. Whether it’s a quiet dinner for two, a party with friends and family, or a spontaneous adventure, savor the joy and excitement of your engagement.

Preparing a successful surprise proposal takes careful planning and thoughtfulness. By understanding your partner’s preferences, choosing the perfect location, and paying attention to details, you can create a magical moment that you both will cherish forever. Happy planning, and congratulations on your upcoming engagement!

Alli & Yoanny are amazing, they met through and app. Normally the people thinks those things don’t work.. but this beautiful couple is a great example that LOVE is everywhere and you can find your other half in many different ways.

For this engagement session we thought about many different spots, but as always Phillipe Park is on the top five. Alli took a look with Yoanny for all the options, and finally decided that Phillipe Park was the best option for their engagement session.

We started as you might see walking around the most icon tree this park has, the big tree that EVEYONE wants to take pics with. So check here the first part of it. Later I will share more of it and more of this beautiful park that makes a perfect spot not just for engagement sessions, but all kind of portrait sessions… coming soon, we will be sharing a Quinceanera in this same place.

They had enough time to change their cloths and have a second outfit. We normally encourage our couples to do that if the time is enough, this help them to have a longer variety in their photos and also because many of them use these images for their wedding website or for their save the dates pictures.

Don’t hesitate to bring a second outfit, specially in places like the Phillipe Park. This park has facilities everywhere and make this easy to accomplish. Also, we love to have different outfits for their gallery, it brings a longer option in portraits that could be GREAT for their wedding slideshow or social media platforms. We normally do this for all our portrait sessions , including smashing cakes and branding .

Check here the second part of the session with different outfits.

Clearwater beach engagement session , Clearwater session. Florida engagement

Kyle and Mallory got engaged in the beautiful Clearwater beach just before the storm in November. We met online, Kyle was actually who contacted me to surprise Mallory during their trip to Florida. We talked and discussed the details weeks before. We had to move the session one day before the session date because of the big storm that hit Florida after the hurricane Ian.

Clearwater beach engagement session

Kyle choose to do it super random, we had a plan before to do it during the sunset at the beach , Sand Key beach to be exactly … he was going to bring a picnic basket and he was going to propose there… but we moved the date and the plans. This time he and Mallory were just walking to a bar in Clearwater beach, when suddenly he proposed to her in one knee.

After this special moment, she saw me and understood it was all planned . Then we walk to the beach and did a special session together just before the storm hit Florida that same evening.

The place was empty because of that , so that’s why it looks GREAT and perfect for their session.

Check here some of my favorite moments with them.

After the first part at the beach, it started to rain… so we moved closer to the street to get cover. We started to walk and then we saw the ice cream shop. We got inside and Mallory got an ice cream… it was a perfect ending of the session. Check these last images… we had so much fun at the last part.
